During the Middle Ages, feudalism was the main political system. The landowner, or lord, owned land called a fief and sold it to someone called a vassal. Some peasants, but not slaves because they were not sold or owned, called serfs lived in manors. Instead of paying with money, they worked on the manor, usually in the fields, in exchange for security and protection.
